What began as a solo marathon in Johannesburg to honour Women’s Day has grown into an annual event and charity initiative supporting women-led businesses across South Africa. Inspired by the historic 1956 march of 20,000 women to the Union Buildings, our walk now pays tribute to their courage while creating real-world opportunities for the next generation.
The Route
On 9 August 1956, 20,000 women marched to the Union Buildings in Pretoria to protest against legislation aimed at tightening the apartheid government's control over the movement of black women in urban areas. We will now follow in their footsteps and march a marathon to the Union Buildings from Sandton, South Africa to commemorate the resistance and unity the South African women showed on that day.
